A vaccine for epidemic influenza. An antigen and compositions comprising same which create antibodies in animals and humans effective against Hong Kong subtype influenza. Methods for creating virus types having the desired antigenic properties. The vaccine causes immunity against the forthcoming Hong Kong subtype influenza.
