ABSTRACT:
A reactive monomer for preparing ultraviolet absorbing polymers has formula (I) wherein R.sup.1 is a halogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 straight or branched chain alkoxy group; and R is a --(CH.sub.2).sub.3 O--, --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 O--, --CH(CH.sub.3)CH.sub.2 O--, --CH.sub.2 CH(CH.sub.3)O(--, --(CH.sub.2).sub.3 OCH.sub.2 --, --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 OCH.sub.2 --, --CH(CH.sub.3)CH.sub.2 OCH.sub.2 --, or --CH.sub.2 CH(CH.sub.3)OCH.sub.2 --group. The compound can be used to produce ultraviolet absorbing polymers, such as those used for ocular devices including contact and intraocular lenses.
