ABSTRACT:
A method for inhibiting or relaxing skeletal muscle contractions which comprises contacting said skeletal muscle with a skeletal muscle relaxing amount, and a method for the treatment of disease states resulting from or exacerbated by undesirable contractions of skeletal muscle, which comprises administering a skeletal muscle relaxing amount to an individual in need thereof of a compound selected from the group consisting of nitroxyl ion (NO.sup.-), nitrosonium ion (NO.sup.+), nitric oxide and nitric oxide adducts or providers. This invention also is directed to stimulating the contraction of muscles in a mammal by administering an effective amount of a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor.
