ABSTRACT:
N-polyhydroxyalkyl fatty acid amides are used as thickening agents for liquid aqueous surfactant systems. Compounds of formula ##STR1## where R.sub.1 is an alkyl group; R.sub.2 is hydrogen, an alkyl group, or an alkylene oxide group; and X is a polyhydroxyalkyl group, are used as thickeners. The thickeners are particularly useful in liquid surfactant systems which contain paraffinsulfonate.
