ABSTRACT:
The combination of a copper halide catalyst certain peroxidic compounds has been found advantageous for the oxidation of Schiff bases of the formula ##STR1## to the corresponding benzoxazoles ##STR2## wherein one of R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 is --NO.sub.2 and the other is --H, alkyl of 1 to 20 carbons, or --NO.sub.2 ; and R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently --H or alkyl of 1 to 20 carbons, with the proviso that R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 contain a total of 6 carbons. Benzoxazoles of the latter type have utility as organo-soluble, metallurgical extractants.
