Composition comprising an aqueous or partially aqueous functional fluid susceptible to degradation by a metal; and b) a metal deactivator having the formula I: ##STR1## in which X is a group having the formula II. ##STR2## in which R is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl.
