ABSTRACT:
An improved trellis code modulation (TCM) decoder for the land mobile environment is provided. According to the invention, a frequency discriminator is placed at the output of the pilot extraction filter and its output passed through a soft limiter and used to modify the metric used by the Viterbi decoder. Under high signal conditions, the output of the discriminator is small and the Euclidian metric is used. During deep fades and especially during a rapid phase change, the output of the discriminator is large and can be used to modify the metric. While the invention is particularly useful for the land mobile environment, it can easily be applied to other types of pilot assisted TCM schemes over Rayleigh faded channels.
