ABSTRACT:
The solid content of aqueous suspensions is separated from the liquid phase by electrophoresis and electro-osmosis. An electrode assembly comprising two closely spaced mesh electrodes is placed in the suspension and a potential is applied between the electrodes so that the solids in the suspension migrate to one electrode where they are electro-osmostically consolidated, the consolidated material being periodically removed. Preferably the assembly comprises collapsible spacer means which are periodically collapsed in order to squeeze out the consolidated material.
