ABSTRACT:
Methods and compositions are provided for treating diluents (including whole blood or at least one blood component) comprising hemoglobin containing erythrocytes (i.e., red blood cells), in order to increase the oxygen delivery capacity of the hemoglobin, wherein nitric oxide is bound to most or all of the hemoglobin present in said erythrocytes as .alpha.-nitrosyl-hemoglobin or its oxygen bound forms.
