ABSTRACT:
A process is provided for selectively converting formaldehyde in an acidic organic waste aqueous stream in the most part to formose sugars rather than to alkali metal formate and methanol by reacting the stream with a strong alkali base to provide a pH of at least about 8.5 and heating the resulting basic solution to a temperature of at least about 80.degree. C. The formaldehyde is present in the waste stream in amounts between about 1000 ppm to 10,000 ppm.
