ABSTRACT:
A transmission type display device to be incorporated in a projector or the like has improved efficiency in condensing incident luminous flux. The transmission type display device includes a pair of transparent substrates which are joined to each other through the intermediation of a predetermined gap and which are equipped with electrodes that form pixels arranged in a matrix-like form. An electro-optical material is held in the gap between the substrates and serves to modulate the G transmittance of the incident luminous flux for each pixel to convert it to an output luminous flux. On the upper transparent substrate, a micro lens having an aspheric configuration is formed and condenses an incident luminous flux on a pixel opening under conditions which reduce the spherical aberration to zero. This micro lens has, for example, an ellipsoidal or a hyperboloidal configuration.
