A transmission operating apparatus A mainly includes: a forward/backward direction sensor3which detects positions of a shift lever1manipulated by the driver; an operation mode selecting switch7which selects one of two operation modes to be manipulated by the shift lever1; a forward/backward manipulation reaction force actuator9; and a controller4. The controller4further includes: an operation panel setting section4A which virtually sets an operation panel corresponding to the operation mode selected by the operation mode selecting switch7; a reaction force control section4B which sets a reaction force corresponding to the position of the shift lever1in accordance with the operation panel; and a transmission control section4C which controls a transmission6based on the position of the shift lever1in relation to the operation panel.
