A stable transformed HEK 293 cell comprising a functional GABA.sub.A receptor that comprises a GABA.sub.A receptor .alpha. subunit, a GABA.sub.A receptor .beta. subunit and a GABA.sub.A receptor .gamma. subunit is disclosed.
