ABSTRACT:
A tool holding assembly, for use with a multi-station turret of a lathe or chucking machine, that allows the positioning of tools to be automatically reestablished when a previously removed tool is to be remounted. In a retrofitting embodiment, the tool holder is comprised of a base unit that will be fixed to the turret and at least one separate tool holding member removably attached to that base unit. The base unit will be secured at a precise and fixed location on the turret top plate and to effect a tool change, only the tool holding member will be removed from the base unit. In one exemplary embodiment, the base unit has a machined slot or groove in the front surface thereof and each tool holding member has a mating machined tongue that will cooperate to limit or prevent relative horizontal movement yet permit relative vertical movement therebetween. A separate vertical positioning mechanism will set and maintain the relative vertical positioning. A tool and its tool holding member when mounted to a base unit, will be automatically positioned horizontally and vertically. The turret top plate can also be integrally formed with a plurality of exposed mounting faces, as on individual base units, with the tool holding members then being mounted directly to the turret.
