ABSTRACT:
A tolane compound represented by the following general formula (I) which can elevate the anisotropy (.DELTA.n) of the refractive index of a liquid crystal composition: ##STR1## wherein R represents an alkynyl or an alkadienyl group having 3 to 18 carbon atoms, and R' represents an alkyl or an alkoxy group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms.
