ABSTRACT:
A thrust reverser able to accommodate the convergent shape of the nacelle used on an ultrahigh bypass fan engine. The thrust reverser includes a plurality of tapered cascaded vane sections (84/132) that are connected to an aft edge of an annular ring (82), which is disposed at the rear of a fixed portion of a nacelle (66) surrounding an engine core (62). An aft portion (70) of the nacelle includes a plurality of pockets (96/152) in which the cascaded vane sections are stowed during operation of the engine in a forward thrust mode. Linear actuators (98) translate the aft portion rearwardly, exposing the cascaded vane sections and deploying a plurality of blocker panels (94/136), for operation of the engine in a reverse thrust mode. In a first embodiment, the cascaded vane sections (84) are pivotally connected to the annular ring and the blocker panels are connected with telescoping links (104) to the annular ring. In a second embodiment, the cascaded vane sections (132) are fixed to the annular ring, and the blocker panels are pivotally connected by a fixed length link (138) to the outer surface of the engine core.
