ABSTRACT:
A thrust bearing11for use with a shaft13having a collar15mounted the shaft13and rotatable therewith has a base ring17, a series of shoes19positioned on the base ring17, and a compressible resilient spacing member29positioned between the base ring17and a housing31for the thrust bearing11. The spacing member29supports the thrust bearing11when the shaft13is rotating during no-load operating conditions, as well as dampens the forces placed on the thrust bearing11by the shaft13when the shaft13is rotating during no-load conditions. The spacing member29is sufficiently stiff that it supports the thrust bearing11when the shaft13is rotating under no-load conditions, but is sufficiently compressible to be compressed to the extent that the gap33between the base ring17and the housing31is eliminated due to the forces placed on the thrust bearing11by the shaft13bringing the base ring17into contact with the housing31during normal load operating conditions.
