A method and apparatus for detecting faults in cables. The invention comprises computing a plurality of thresholds representing a corresponding plurality of values of reflections in the cable; comparing a received reflection to a given threshold; if the received reflection value is greater than the given threshold value, then determining the location of the cable fault; and if the received reflection is not greater than the given threshold value, then taking no further action.
