A water soluble terpolymer useful in controlling deposition of scale in aqueous systems comprised of monomeric repeat units (g), (h) and (i) wherein repeat unit (g) comprises the structure ##STR1## wherein E is the repeat unit obtained after polymerization of an .alpha.,.beta. ethylenically unsaturated compound, wherein repeat unit (h) comprises the structure ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and denote H, methyl or ethyl and M is a water soluble cation or H, and
