An x-ray tube target assembly16provided. The target assembly16includes a target plate element18having an impact surface24, a target rear surface30, an inner target bore22, and an outer target circumference38. The target plate element18defines a target plate depth32between the impact surface24and the target rear surface30. The target rear surface30is formed such that the target plate depth32tapers from an increased target plate depth34at the inner target bore to a decreased target plate depth36at the outer target circumference38. The target assembly16further includes a graphite base element28having a base upper surface42and a base rear surface44. The base upper surface42is formed to mate with the target rear surface30.
