ABSTRACT:
The present invention discloses an electromechanical traversing step system for transporting elderly users12, infirm and others between floors of a building. A single moveable step14ascends or descends on a set of tracks16secured to the wall of the stairway18or the staircase structure above the flight of stairs20. Travel is initiated by the user12positioning themselves on the movable step14, selecting the ascension22or descension24switch and then gripping the handrails. Motion of the step commences and continues when a pressure sensor26responds to a force on the step14and the omic resistance of the user12is detected by sensors28in each of the handrails. Ascending motion continues until the tread of the movable step14is flush with the upper floor30. The movable step14automatically returns to the docked position32at the bottom34of the staircase18once the user12departs from the step to the upper floor30. The movable staircase must return to the docked position32on the lower floor to provide a conventional staircase for traversing by foot. The movable step14may be returned to the upper floor30by pressing the step call-up switch36, which overrides the handrail28and step pressure26sensors and allows the movable step14to ascend without the user holding the handrails.
