ABSTRACT:
A system10for detecting sliding of a wheel12on a rail14includes a roller16disposed adjacent the rail14so that a wheel12travelling along the rail14can engage the roller16, and a tachometer18coupled with the roller16for providing a rotation signal representative of the degree of rotation of the roller. The system10includes a computer20which receives the rotation signal from the tachometer18and by using an appropriate rotation algorithm calculates the degree of rotation of the roller16. The computer20then compares the degree of rotation with a predetermined range of roller rotations and, if the calculated degree of rotation of the roller is less than predicted by analysis, the apparatus10provides a signal indicative of the wheel12sliding.
