ABSTRACT:
A method and apparatus for encoding data produces a code stream of code words, where each code word includes two subsets of code bits. Each subset of code bits is constrained by a different maximum transition run constraint. In an alternative embodiment, the method and apparatus produces a code stream comprised of alternating even bit locations and odd bit locations, where the even bit locations are constrained by a different maximum run length constraint than the odd bit locations.
