ABSTRACT:
The present invention provides a system10for irradiating a breast20of a patient22. The system10comprises a gantry12rotatable about a horizontal axis14and comprising a radiation source16for generating a radiation beam18and a detector24spaced from the radiation source16, and a barrier26disposed between the patient22and the gantry12. The barrier26is provided with an opening30adapted to allow a breast20passing therethrough to be exposed to the radiation beam18. In some embodiments, the barrier26is provided with an opening30adapted to allow both the breast20and the tissue leading from the breast to axilla and the muscle tissue of the adjacent chest wall passing therethrough to be exposed to the radiation beam18.
