Imines of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is alkyl and R.sub.2 is Ketal, alkoxymethyl or arylmethyl and enamides of the formula: ##STR2## wherein R.sub.2 is as defined above and R.sub.3 is oxygen or hydrogen are useful intermediates in a process for preparing swainsonine.
