ABSTRACT:
A process for the production of an aliphatic carboxylic acid of the formula RCOOH, wherein R is an alkyl group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, comprises the catalytic reaction of an alcohol of formula ROH and carbon monoxide in the presence of a rhodium catalyst, methyl iodide, a high lithium iodide content, a low water content and an organic ester of formula RCO.sub.2 R. The process can optionally be carried out in the presence of hydrogen and/or an organic ligand of formula ER.sup.11.sub.3 where E is nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony or bismuth and R.sup.11 is an organic moiety.
