An improved supertwisted nematic liquid crystal display device which comprises a pair of glass substrates each having an electrode and an orientation film formed on the surface of the electrode, and a liquid crystal composition comprising a specific base liquid crystal and optically active substance added thereto and interposed between the glass substrates so that the liquid crystal molecules have a twist angle .phi. of 210.degree. to 270.degree..
