ABSTRACT:
In accordance with the present invention, there is now provided a novel selective catalyst useful for the synthesis of methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE) or ethyl-tert-butyl ether (ETBE) prepared by reacting isobutene with methanol or ethanol, respectively. More specifically, the catalyst of the present invention comprises from about 0.5 to about 7% by weight of triflic acid (trifluoro-methanesulfonic acid, CF.sub.3 SO.sub.3 H, hereafter referred to as TFA) incorporated onto an acid form Y zeolite.
