ABSTRACT:
A subband coding method for dividing a digital video signal into a plurality of frequency bands in vertical and horizontal directions in a spatial frequency region includes executing two-dimensional multilayer (n-layer) wavelet transform on each processing unit (field) of the digital video signal and rearranging data in those frequency bands to a plurality of data blocks each consisting of, for example, 8.times.8 pieces of data. Data in the data blocks are scanned in a predetermined order to generate a data train so that zero-runs easily occur.
