A sterol derivative represented by the general formulas (I) or (II) which is widely usable as the external base for the skin, emulsifier, etc., for cosmetics, toiletries, medicines, etc., since they have an excellent effect of remedying the chaps of the skin, are capable of stabilizing the lamellar liquid crystal structure and have an excellent surface-activating effect: ##STR1## wherein: R.sup.1 represents a residue remaining after removing the hydrogen atom from the hydroxyl group of a sterol having one hydroxyl group,
