ABSTRACT:
Disclosed a structure for supporting a steering device including a steering shaft9adapted to transmit a steering force of a steering wheel to road wheels, relative to a vehicle body through an instrument-panel member6extending a lateral direction of a vehicle. The support structure comprises a first bracket20fixed to the instrument-panel member6, a steering column19rotatably mounting the steering shaft9, a second bracket21, 22fixed to the steering column19, and coupling means23, 24for providing a coupling between the first bracket20and the second bracket21, 22. The coupling means23, 24is designed to allow the second bracket21, 22to have an axial relative displacement with respect to the first bracket20on the basis of an axial direction of the steering shaft9while allowing an upward relative displacement of the second bracket21, 22with respect to the first bracket20in the course of the axial relative displacement, during a vehicle collision. The support structure of the present invention makes it possible to displace a steering shaft upward during a vehicle collision so as to prevent the knee of a passenger from interfering with the steering shaft, while ensuring a steering operation by a passenger, in a simplified structure.
