ABSTRACT:
A mold tube is contained within an open water-cooling vessel, and the tube is cooled by directing water sprays at it. Although a steam barrier would otherwise form around the mold tube and prevent water penetration, thus resulting in a tube melt-down, this effect of the steam barrier is eliminated if certain operating parameters have values within critical ranges. The important parameters include the distance between the spray nozzles and the mold tube, the angle of each water spray, and the overlap of the sprays on the mold tube.
