ABSTRACT:
A spool valve10for a variable camshaft timing (VCT) phaser for an internal combustion engine comprises a spool11slidable in a bore12in a valve sleeve13, the spool11having spaced apart lands14-17dividing the bore12into chambers41, 42, 43between adjacent lands. The valve sleeve13has fluid passages22-27including a lock passage26communicating with a lock pin31, a vent passage27communicating with a fluid sump35, and a lock pin oil feed passage22, with the spool11being slidable in the bore12to interconnect select passages via particular chambers, wherein the vent passage27and the lock pin passage26are connectable with different chambers43and42respectively. The arrangement avoids unnecessary operation of the lock pin31.
