The spindle device1is provided with: a housing10formed with a support hole10a; a spindle12which is supported to rotate freely about an axis within the support hole10aof the housing10and of which distal end is attached with a tool T; a drive motor20for rotating the spindle12about the axis, the drive motor20being configured by a rotor22arranged to rotate freely on an outer circumferential surface of the spindle12and a stator23fixedly provided on an inner circumferential surface of the support hole10aof the housing10; an electromagnetic clutch30for transmitting intermittently a drive force of the drive motor20to the spindle12; and a controlling device40for controlling an operation of the drive motor20and that of the electromagnetic clutch30.
