ABSTRACT:
A PET mammography detector having an ellipsoidal detection surface. The ellipsoidal detection surface comprises at least one scintillation element, and is configured such that a larger portion of gamma ray emissions strike normal or near normal to the detection surface than in rectangular or cylindrical detection surfaces. The detection surface is preferably spherical, but may also be an oblate or prolate spheroid. The detector may also include a positioning ring and table to allow imaging of the patient's breast while the breast hangs freely and uncompressed inside the detector.
