ABSTRACT:
Electrochemical cells are provided having solid electrolytes of enhanced conductivity at low temperatures. These electrolytes comprise binary and ternary mixtures of salts having the compositions--M.sub.2 SO.sub.4 --(Me).sub.x SO.sub.4 or M.sub.2 SO.sub.4 --(Me).sub.x SO.sub.4 .dbd.MyX, respectively where M is--an ion of an alkali metal, Ag, or a mixture thereof, Me is an ion of a divalent metal or Ag, x is 1 or 2, x being 1 when Me is a divalent metal ion and 2 when Me is Ag, X is a halogen or sulfate ion, and y is 1 or 2, y being 1 when X is halogen and 2 when X is sulfate. In addition to having a high conductivity at lower operating temperatures, the phases are stable at least 100.degree. C. above the transformation points.
