ABSTRACT:
Metal-2-mercaptobenzothiazoles, metal-2-mercaptobenzoxazoles, and metal-2-mercaptobenzimidazoles are used as smoke retardants for polyvinyl halides and polystyrenes and have the general structure of ##STR1## WHERE R and R.sup.1 can be a hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl or halogen, X is either oxygen, sulfur or NR.sup.2, M is a metal, n is an integer equal to the valence of the metal and R.sup.2 can be a hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or alkylaryl group.
