A lock10for a sliding door or window. The lock10includes a hollow body11within which there is pivotally mounted a pair of hook tongues14and15. The tongues are driven by rack gears54which are operated by a lock cylinder19. The rack gears54move linearly in opposite directions to cause angular movement of the tongues14and15in opposite rotational directions.
