ABSTRACT:
A silver halide photographic material comprises at least one compound represented by general formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents an electron withdrawing group; R.sup.2 represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group, an aralkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aryl group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, an amino group, a hydroxyl group, a carboxyl group, a sulfo group, --NHSO.sub.2 R.sup.3, --SO.sub.2 R.sup.3, --NHCOR.sup.3, --NR.sup.3 CONR.sup.4 R.sup.5, --NR.sup.3 COOR.sup.4, --SO.sub.2 NR.sup.3 COR.sup.4 or --COOR.sup.3 (in which R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 each represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an aralkyl group, a cycloalkyl group or an aryl group); L.sup.1, L.sup.2 and L.sup.3 each independently represents a methine group; X represents a sulfur atom or NR.sup.6 ; Y represents an oxygen atom or NR.sup.7 (in which R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 have the same meaning as R.sup.3); Z represents an aryl group or an aromatic heterocyclic group; and n represents an integer of 0, 1 or 2, with the proviso that when X is a sulfur atom, Y is preferably NR.sup.7 and when X is NR.sup.6, Y is preferably an oxygen atom or NR.sup.7.
