ABSTRACT:
In the process for oxidizing methacrolein to a methacrylic acid salt with an oxidizing gas in a strongly alkaline medium at a temperature of 0 to 100.degree. C. and in the presence of a finely divided silver catalyst and recovering methacrylic acid by acidification, the improvement which comprises carrying out said oxidation in the presence of a small amount of dissolved alkali metal carbonate.
