ABSTRACT:
A sheet feed mechanism for a device such as a printer, with a chassis2configured to support a stack of sheets4. A top sheet engaging member6for engaging the top-most sheet40of the stack and moving it relative to the remainder of the stack4. A stack engaging structure8for engaging the stack4and biasing its top sheet40against the top sheet engaging member6. The stack engaging structure8having a friction surface18extending parallel to the stack engaging structure's direction of travel. A lock mechanism12mounted to the chassis2for limited relative movement thereto, the lock mechanism12having a biased contact foot32for engaging the friction surface18to secure the stack engaging structure8to the lock mechanism12for movement therewith. An actuator20mounted to the chassis2to disengage the contact foot32from the friction surface such that the stack engaging structure8moves relative to the lock mechanism12to press the top-most sheet40against the top sheet engaging6, then the actuator disengages the contact foot32such that it re-engages the friction surface18and then moves the lock mechanism relative to the chassis2such that the stack engaging structure8also retracts a predetermined distance from the top-most sheet engaging member6.
