ABSTRACT:
The method of making a foamed, low density shaped refractory product consisting of TiB.sub.2 and Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 which comprises the steps of foaming an exothermic reaction mixture consisting of TiO.sub.2, B.sub.2 O.sub.3 and Al, loading the reaction mixture into a self sustaining shape, locally igniting the shaped reaction mixture in air at ambient conditions and recovering the foamed, low density, shaped refractory product.
