A shampoo, creme rinse composition is provided comprising an anionic or amphoteric detergent, or combinations thereof and a substituted quaternary ammonium compound represented by the formula: ##EQU1## where R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R.sub.3 is a benzyl radical which may be further substituted by a C.sub.1 or C.sub.2 alkyl radical;
