ABSTRACT:
A separate read/write magnetic head of the present invention includes a magnetoresistive head11having a magnetoresistive film25disposed between a lower shield23and an upper shield28, both of which are formed on a substrate21, and a pair of electrodes26electrically connected to the magnetoresistive film25; and an inductive magnetic thin film head12having a coil33between a lower pole piece31and an upper pole piece35, both of which are disposed on the upper shield28of the magnetoresistive head11with a separation film29being sandwiched therebetween, and through a magnetic gap film32and an interlayer insulating film34. Reduced protrusion of the read head element toward the air bearing surface due to heat deformation caused by changes in ambient temperature can be achieved by configuring the lower shield23and the upper shield28so that the sum of their thicknesses is 0.4 μm or more and less than 3.4 μm.
