A semiconductor optical device100has an n-type semiconductor layer2, an active layer3, and a p-type semiconductor portion4provided in order on a principal surface1aof a substrate1. The p-type semiconductor portion4has a ridge portion40and a base portion42, and a contact layer5is formed on the ridge portion40. A first portion60of an insulating layer6extends along a plane intersecting with the principal surface1aof the substrate1, on a side face4bof the ridge portion40and on a side face5bof the contact layer5. An end6aof the first portion60is higher than an edge5cof the side face5bof the contact layer5.
