A semiconductor laser assembly includes a substrate10having a first mount surface10aand a second mount surface10b, and a submount3which is mounted on the first mount surface10aand which is separate from a monitoring photodiode4. A laser diode1is mounted on the submount3. The monitoring photodiode4is mounted on the second mount surface10b, and an electrode4aformed on the monitoring photodiode4is used as a relay electrode for a metal wire5aconnected to an upper-surface electrode of the laser diode1.
