ABSTRACT:
A self-monitored optical sensor having a code plate having a plurality of tracks disposed thereon. Each of the tracks comprises a pattern of reflective and absorptive segments that form a code that is indicative of a discrete position of the code plate. The code plate further includes a monitoring track that encodes a number of expected absorptive or reflective segments in the code plate at each discrete position. A detector circuit compares the number of absorptive or reflective segments detected and the number of expected absorptive or reflective segments in order to determine if there is a fault in the code plate.
