ABSTRACT:
Acidic gases containing H.sub.2 S, CO.sub.2 and substantial concentratiOns of COS are reduced in sulfur content by contacting said gases in a first stage at elevated temperatures with an aqueous polyalkanolamine solution containing at least 20% by weight of a tetramethylene sulfone wherein a substantial portion of the COS present is hydrolyzed to H.sub.2 S and CO.sub.2, after which the hydrolyzed acid gases consisting substantially of H.sub.2 S and CO.sub.2 are contacted in a second stage with an alkanolamine absorbent for H.sub.2 S under conditions where H.sub.2 S is selectively removed to low levels.
