ABSTRACT:
A catalyst for selective hydrogenation of highly unsaturated hydrocarbons in the presence of less unsaturated hydrocarbons comprises palladium supported on alumina having a defined combination of micromeritic properties, the palladium being present mainly in the regions of the catalyst particles not more than 150 microns beneath their geometric surface. The alumina is made suitably by calcining pseudobohmite at 1000.degree.-1200.degree. C. The catalyst has a long working life in "front-end" or "tail-end" hydrogenation.
