3-Q-4-R'-6-R-2(1H)-pyridinones (I), where Q is hydrogen or cyano, R' is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or n-propyl, and R is methyl, ethyl or n-propyl, are shown to be useful as cardiotonic agents.
